The idea of the unconscious mind was made popular by Sigmund Freud and was later visually explored in depth by the Surrealist art movement. Having researched the unconscious mind for my thesis and always having had a great interest in Surrealist art, I thought it would be fitting to work with the two for this project. This zine, “Tapped,” explores the unconscious mind of a creative (me) through the creation of handmade visuals using the Surrealist technique of automatism. Automatism encourages the artist to express themself freely, without conscious thought. During the creation of this zine I used paint, tape, paper, ink, and found objects. I then digitally manipulated the visuals which are accompanied by Andre Breton’s 1924 Surrealist Manifesto.
